Montauto : Wines from Maremma Tuscany

The Montàuto estate covers 130 hectares and has been producing grapes from its vineyards, situated on the hilltops and 150 meters above sea level, for the last 40 years.
The vineyards are in the area of Montàuto 15 kilometers from the coast in one of the most wild and unspoilt corners of Tuscany’s Maremma characterised by important climatic range between day and night. The soil is particularly vocated for the cultivation of the vines and very clayey and rich with pebbles. Of the sixteen hectares of the vineyard a part is 40 years old, one part is between 15 and 30 years old the rest are very young planted with modern technique. The most important vine is of red grape which is the Sangiovese together with Alicante and Ciliegiolo with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The white vine grape, Trebbiano Malvasia Gerchetto and a small amount of Sauvignon, is the most local. In 2004, the winery decided to make wine with the help of enologist Fabrizio Montard and we produced 16,000 bottles of Sovana Rosso DOC. In 2005 we produced two DOC wine Sovana Rosso and Bianco di Pitigliano and an IGT Maremma Toscana bianco Sauvignon and a blend of Sangiovese/Alicante IGT Maremma Toscana rosso passed in french oak bariques.
